Missiles fell down on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine last Monday, October 10. The Russians were responsible for the strikes, claiming retaliation for a bombing that destroyed the bridge connecting Crimea to Russia. The missiles targeted water and power installations. On the other hand, Russia states to have targeted military and electrical installations. Besides the capital, Kyiv, the targeted cities were Kharkiv, Lyiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhia, Mykolaev, and Ternopil. Air sirens sounded in every region of Ukraine, except Crimea, during four hours.

At least eight people were killed, and 24 wounded, in just one of the Kyiv strikes. On the other hand, Ukraine’s man in charge of law enforcement mentions 70 infrastructure sites. Of these 70 buildings, 29 are critical. Regarding the missile strikes, Zelensky claims 56 of the fired missiles were shot down by Ukraine. Moscow also launched 24 drones, many of whom were shot down too. Zelensky adds Russian forces also used Iranian drones.

Kharkiv was struck three times, being deprived of water and electricity supplies. On Lyiv, Russia attacked energy infrastructure. These bombings caused people in the targeted areas, like Kharkiv, to go into shelters.
According to Putin, the targets were “energy, military command, and communication facilities in Ukraine”. He adds that his forces used precision weapons in this strikes. This attack was carried out one day after he blamed the Ukrainians for the bridge attack, celebrated in social media by the Ukrainian public. He also claimed this series of strikes were being carried out for retaliation for the bombing in the bridge connecting Russia and Crimea. He described this incident as a “terrorist action”.
“It is not possible to leave unanswered. If attempts at terrorist attacks continue, the response for Russia will be severe and correspond to the level of threat”,
he said on a meeting of his Security Council on Monday.

He also threatened to carry out a “tough” and “proportionate” response would be carried out if Ukraine keeps attacking in a sense that “threatens Russia’s security”. He also held Kyiv responsible for launching three attacks on the Kursk nuclear plant in Russia, 85 kilometers from the border. Besides that, he also blamed Ukraine for attempting to hit the TurkStream gas pipeline from Russia to Turkey under the Black Sea.
President Vladimir Putin has been under internal pressure to stop a possible Ukrainian counteroffensive and to respond to the bridge attack.


Three cruise missiles were launched from the Black Sea, and crossed the Moldavian airspace.
One of the targets was the Klitschko Bridge, although it did not suffer heavy damage. The German consulate in Kyiv was also targeted.
“These attacks killed and injured civilians and destroyed targets with no military purpose”,
President Joe Biden stated, condemning the strikes.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary Antonio Guterres, described the strikes as “unacceptable escalation”.
The EU foreign policy chief, Joseph Borrell, said such attacks “have no place in the 21st century”.
Dmitry Medvedev, described the attacks as the “first episode”, stating that the complete goal was “the complete dismantling of Ukraine’s political regime”.
The strikes caused a blackout and deprived Ukrainian citizens of electricity. Meanwhile, Ukraine announced they would stop power exports to Europe from Tuesday onwards.
