Talking about Iran

On Wednesday, October 9th, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, and US President Joe Biden, held a call. They both discussed the response to early October Iranian attack on Israel.  US Vice President, Kamala Harris, was also present in the call.

The US President and the Israeli Prime Minister held a call in which they discussed the response to the Iranian attack. US Vice President Kamala Harris also joined the call. Biden also asked Netanyahu to minimize civilian casualties in Lebanon. They also discussed the situation in Gaza, mentioning how urgent it was to restore access to the north, reinvigorating the corridor from Jordan. The phone call lasted for thirty minutes.

It is the first call between them since August. It came amidst the opening of the Lebanese front, meaning an escalation in the conflict. Four people were killed in an Israeli airstrike near Sidon, and an Israeli couple in Kiryat Shmona were killed. These are the first Israeli civilian casualties since the invasion of Lebanon began. Netanyahu has promised to make Iran pay for the missile attack in early October. On the other hand, Iran has stated that they will respond to any Israeli attack.

The relationship between Biden and Netanyahu has seen tension because of the way that the Israeli PM has conducted the wars in Gaza and Lebanon. Also because of distant objectives for both countries. The US President has accused Netanyahu of having no strategy. The Israeli PM has ignored the Biden administration past calls for ceasefires. Biden also stated he wouldn’t support an Israeli strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. This also comes nearby the US Presidential elections. Arab voters threaten to withdraw support for the Democrats, with the handling of the war in Gaza. And Trump is using the conflict for campaign, criticizing how Biden is handling it.

Any Israeli attack on Iran could mean an escalation leading to a broader war in the region, possibly dragging the US into the conflict. Depending on the target, the attack could have a global effect. For example, if Israel hits the oil sector, oil prices could rise.  Since this comes when the elections are nearby, it could have an impact on the election against Democrats. The Democratic Party could lose support from the Arab community in the US. The former President, Donald Trump, could use this for returning to the White House. It has been thought that Netanyahu aims to boost the popularity of Trump in the elections.

The attack could be a big escalation, since the Israeli Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, said that the attack on Iran would be “deadly, precise and above all surprising”. Recently, the Israeli Prime Minister also held a call with US Presidential candidate Donald Trump, who praised him for the killing of Hezbollah leader, Hassan Nasrallah.

It is uncertain what will happen, although the Israeli cabinet has already authorized the attack on Iran. Thus, it will happen. The consequences are unpredictable, although the rise of global prices and/or an escalation in the year long conflict is not out of the table.

Biden and Netanyahu had a call to discuss the response to Iran, and the situations in Lebanon and Gaza. The Israeli actions could have an impact on the region and/or the world, depending on the kind of target they choose. From both, the pro and anti-Israel sides, the Democrats could pay a price in the elections for their handling of the conflict.
