This week, we saw some incidents in the Indo Pacific region. These begun back on October 3rd, when North Korea launched a ballistic missile near Japan's airspace. The following day, the US and South Korea responded by launching together four ballistic missiles.

The launching took place from Mupyong, Jagang province, around 7:23 am, and lasted 20 minutes. The Japanese Government said the missile landed in the Pacific Ocean, 3000 kilometers away from Japanese territory. This is outside the Japanese Exclusive Economic Zone. The impact caused no damage.
Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, condemned these actions, describing them as “violent behavior”.
After the launch, Tokyo issued a warning for the inhabitants of the Hokkaido Island to find shelter. Some train services were suspended temporarily. Anti air sirens were heard in Aomori.

Seoul responded to this by deploying four fighters and bombing a simulated target in a shooting range in the Eastern Coast. Also, South Korea carried out a simulation with four ballistic missiles in Gangneug.

This happens in the midst of Japan, the US and South Korea have been working together to strengthen their defenses. Kim Jong-un claims that this is a preparation for war. These are the first exercises in five years. During the last weeks North Korea has been launching ballistic missiles. Five of them were launched the last week of September. Pyongyang has launched 40 missiles in 23 launching exercises. This comes in the context of the latest visit of Kamala Harris to Seoul.

It seems that Kim Jong-Un would want to win a technological race against the US and South Korea. Also, he aims to send a message that, if there are no negotiations, there will be no agreement. Therefore, he will continue to develop his nuclear program. Also, with no recent sanctions, he can continue to do this with impunity.
This is the first time North Korea launches a ballistic missile over Japanese airspace since 2017. Recently, Pyongyang has been defying a UN resolution over nuclear and ballistic tests. Some weeks ago, North Korea passed a law describing itself as a state with nuclear weapons. Kim Jong-Un has said there are no possibilities over denuclearization talks. North Korea comes to action in the midst of the Ukraine crisis, taking advantage of the distractions caused by it.
