On Wednesday, May 29th, US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, visited Moldova, and Prague. This comes upon Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and Russian destabilization actions in the country. This trip aimed to discuss energy, defense, and the NATO summit. This will take place on early July.
Blinken held a meeting with Moldovan Prime Minister, Maia Sandu, in Chisinau. He mentioned that the US considers Moldova a “very important partner in the region”. He also called for a diversification on energetic sources, in order not to depend on only one source. Blinken pledged 135 million USD in aid, for countering Russian disinformation, reform the agricultural industry, and energy security.
In the Czech Republic, Blinken met Czech Foreign Minister, Jan Lipavsky. They discussed support for Ukraine, collective defense modernization, and the strengthening of energetic links.
The visit comes after the visit to Ukraine by Blinken. The United States has provided Moldavia with 774 million USD since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. 80 million of those were for covering rising energy prices in the first winter of the war. Moldavia has been concerned by what it calls “destabilizing actions by Moscow”. It is also holding a referendum in October for entering the European Union. There have been tensions between Moscow and Chisinau since the war in Ukraine began. Moldavia fears Russia could take the war to Transnistria. Transnistria is an unrecognized breakaway territory holding Russian troops since 1991.
Moldavia has accused Russian officials of election interference and destabilization attempts, attempting to derail its efforts to join the European Union going even too far to try to give a coup in 2022. The visit also comes amidst Russian threats against Georgia, where the parliament overrode a presidential veto of a “foreign agents” bill. This bill has sparked protests, since they fear this law will restrict media freedom and obstruct Georgian European aspirations.
Meanwhile, Blinken discussed in Czechia that Prague has sent 600 million USD for Ukraine. They discussed also a way to “contain Russia”.
There was no comment from Russian officials nor the Kremlin.
The important events to watch here are NATO’s summit in July, and the October referendum in Moldavia to join the European Union.
Those events shall be watched, so observers must stay pendant on these.
The main concerns in these visits were Ukraine, energy, defense, NATO, and countering Russia. This shall be watched deeper on July, when NATO’s summit takes place.
