Israel has been bombing Lebanon since Monday, causing casualties that have been described as the highest since the fifteen year long civil war. At least 600 people have been killed due airstrikes. The icing on the cake was the Israeli invasion of Lebanon on Tuesday.
On Friday, September 20th, it was mentioned that the US would not support an Israeli invasion of Lebanon.
On Monday, Israel began to bomb Lebanon.
On Tuesday, Lebanese population began to flee Lebanon for Syria and Iraq. The same day, French Foreign Minister Jean-Nöel Barrot, discussed the situation in Lebanon, mentioning that France had a “long-lasting relationship with Lebanon”. He added that France was working very hard to end the crisis.
On Wednesday, Israel struck Hezbollah targets in the Bekaa Valley region. They also continued to bomb the Shuhba Farms. Also, Israeli opposition minister Yair Lapid, proposed a seven-day long ceasefire. Meanwhile, the Israeli Army Chief told troops to prepare for a possible entry into Lebanon. Also, Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi mentioned that Iran would not remain indifferent shall a full scale war happen in Lebanon. Airstrikes that day killed seventy two people. However, the US mentioned there was no imminent invasion of Lebanon. Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, mentioned that the US and France were working on a ceasefire. Christodoulides mentioned he spoke to Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and French President Emmanuel Macron at New York on sidelines of UN General Assembly, and to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Nethanyahu. It was also mentioned that the countries in the G7 wanted a ceasefire.
The US, the UK and France have been included among the countries that have called for a ceasefire. They proposed a 21 day long one. This has been endorsed by Japan, the US, the EU, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar. On Thursday, the US was projecting optimism about a potential ceasefire, with Lloyd Austin mentioning that war would be destructive for both sides. On Monday, September 30th, 2024, the Israeli Army launched an invasion of Lebanon. Tuesday, Israel time. Israeli air force and artillery are “supporting the ground forces with precise strikes on military targets in the area”. The Israelis claimed they had begun “limited, localized and targeted ground raids” against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.
Israel has been killing a high number of Hezbollah commanders during this week, including two high-ranking in Monday. The US does not think that an Israeli invasion of Lebanon will result in the return of Israelis to their homes in northern Israel, which is the aim of a proposed invasion. Hezbollah joined the war on October 8th, firing rockets towards northern Israel. The Israeli invasion of Lebanon comes after the week of airstrikes, in which more than one thousand people have been killed. Hezbollah has stated that it would continue to launch rockets against Israel if the offensive against Gaza does not stop or there is a ceasefire. Israel has claimed that it would continue to target Hezbollah until the residents in northern Israel can return to their homes.

Beirut’s Dahiyeh district is home to almost 700,000 people. Hassan Nasrallah was Hezbollah’s Secretary General for thirty-two years. He was accused of plotting attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets, and was on Israel’s black list. Nabil Qaouk was someone close to Hezbollah’s leadership, and Israel accused him of “promoting attacks against the State of Israel and its citizens”. Israeli soldiers had been training for this operation for months.
According to the Washington Post, an Israeli source mentioned that the focus is to clear militant infrastructure along the border, thus removing the threat to the communities living in the north.
Nethanyahu could lose majority in parliament if there is a ceasefire and Ben Gvir quits. The exchanges at the border between Israel and Hezbollah have been causing displacements on both sides, perhaps 90,000 people. Meanwhile, airstrikes have killed at least six hundred people. The killing of Nasrallah could mean an escalation in this long year war. An Israeli source told the Washington Post that the IDF aimed for an operation on a smaller scale than that one of 2006.
Doctors Without Borders medical coordinator in Lebanon, Luna Hammad, mentioned that the Israeli attacks were putting pressure on a “fragile health system”. The killing of Nasrallah is the highest profile targeted killing by Israel in years.
Palestinian Authority President, Mahmoud Abbas, offered his condolences for the death of Nasrallah. Iran’ Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, asked Muslims on Saturday to support the Lebanese people and Hezbollah to “confront the oppressive regime”. Iran called it a “war crime”, and declared a five day mourning. Russia condemned the killing of the leader. Hezbollah responded on Saturday and Sunday by launching missiles to the north of Israel. US President Joe Biden described this as an “act of justice towards his “numerous civilian victims, among which there were thousands of American, Israeli and Lebanese civilians”.
Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Kassem, said that “the resistance forces were ready for a ground engagement”.
Future events are unknown. Even, the aims of the Israeli operation in Lebanon are unknown. On the other hand, the United States are worried that the invasion could incite Iranian militias to target its troops in Iraq and Syria. The army has not commented about the duration of the operation. Also, this invasion will test the new Hezbollah leadership. A big refugee crisis could be coming.
The big problem for Israel will be its exit, either it achieves its aims or not.
Israel prepared for this campaign for months, with the recent weeks strikes on Hezbollah being the culmination of that preparation. This includes the killing of Hassan Nasrallah and other leaders Despite allies’ pleas, Israel has decided to refuse ceasefires. Also, Netanyahu aims to use this campaign to keep its majority in the Knesset. Also, this campaign will tell if the elimination of the leadership of Hezbollah was useful for the invasion, or worthless. In the end, the Lebanese people will pay the price. The big amounts of Lebanese going even to Syria and Iraq show it.
