Magdalena Andersson, Swedish Prime Minister from the Social Democratic Party, resigned last Wednesday, September 14th. Her resignation came after the far-right victory won the elections. Those parties won 176 seats out of 349. The elections took place last Sunday, September 11th.

The Swedish Democrats, representing the right wing in Sweden, won the elections by relying on anti immigration and nationalist positions. In part, they also managed to rise in the polls by bringing into the table the gang shooting problem in Sweden. Besides this, they showed a hard line stance on migrant integration. There has been an increase in support for far right parties in Sweden. These parties have vowed to increase prison sentences, reduce immigration to a minimum, and build new nuclear plants.

This party was born out of neo-Nazi groups, as well as from the “Keep Sweden Swedish” movement. This movement was formed back in the decade of the nineties. Then, in 2010, they got into Parliament back in 2010 with 5.7 percent of the votes.

However, they have a quite narrow majority. Therefore, they could have a very fragile government. The speaker of the Parliament, speaker of the Riksdag, may handle over power to Ulk Kristersson, in order to form a new government. All parties must negotiate. The Riksdag cannot elect a new Prime Minister before September 27th. Besides that, Jimmy Akkeson, the Swedish Democrats' leader, will not become Prime Minister. This is due him lacking the support of the parties. In spite of this, this could mark the beginning of a period in which Sweden will be ruled for many years by the far right.
