Last Friday, February 28th, the meeting of Ukranian President Volodymir Zelensky with US President Trump resulted in a clash. This because the US President demanded that Ukraine made a deal with Russia. Otherwise, the US “is out”.
Volodymir Zelensky visited the White House on February 28th to meet US President Donald Trump. The last 10 minutes deteriorated into a tense back and forth confrontation between the two Presidents and US Vice President, J D Vance. They interrupted each other in front of the media instead of what was supposed to be the signing of a minerals deal. They told Zelensky to leave before they could sign the deal after the US President shouted at him. Trump told the Ukrainian President he was “ungrateful” for the US support and accused him of “gambling with World War III”. Zelensky had previously said that “there should not be” compromises with Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Trump said that he would have to make concessions to Russia if he wanted peace with Russia. Vice President J D Vance told Zelensky the war had to be ended by diplomacy. The Ukrainian President mentioned that Putin “broke his own signature” twenty five times on ceasefires and other agreements, and couldn’t be trusted. Trump responded that Putin didn’t break agreements with him, avoiding questions about security guarantees to Ukraine. He later mentioned that he was neither on Ukraine nor Russia’s side, and mocked Zelensky’s “hatred” for Putin as an obstacle to peace.

On Sunday, March 3rd, Zelensky said that he was ready to sign a mineral deal with the United States and described a discussion with European leaders to send a draft peace plan to the US.
The minerals deal was supposed to be a stepping stone to strengthen security ties between Ukraine and the US. The deal involved access to Ukrainian oil, gas and rare minerals. Trump says that Ukraine must repay for the more than $180 billion in aid sent to it since the war began. Trump held a phone call with Putin, and US officials met with their Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia. There were no Ukrainian nor European leaders.

Russia currently holds twenty percent of Ukrainian territory. Back in 2019, there was a ceasefire deal. Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion three years later. Donald Trump called Zelensky a dictator last week.
It had been unclear by then what this would have meant for the deal. Zelensky visited the White House to press Trump not to abandon Ukraine and to warn him not to move close to Vladimir Putin.
Trump wants Zelensky to return to the deal.
After the meeting, Trump told reporters before leaving for Mar-a-Lago that he wanted “an immediate ceasefire”, but mentioned he doubted Zelensky was ready to make peace. On the Truth social media platform, Trump accused Zelensky of disrespecting the US in the Oval Office. Meanwhile, on Fox News, the Ukrainian President stated that the meeting “was not good”, but the relationship with his US counterpart could be salvaged. He also added that Ukraine wouldn’t enter peace talks with Russia until it has security guarantees with Ukraine. Republican senator Lindsey Graham described the incident as “disrespectful”, adding that he didn’t know “if they could ever do business with Zelensky again”. Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries described Zelensky’s treatment as “appalling”, adding that it would strengthen Putin. Democrat senator, Chuck Schumer, accused Trump and Vance of “doing Putin’s dirty work”. Former Ukraine’s Prime Minister, Denys Shmygal, said “Zelensky was right”, as “peace without guarantees is not possible”.
The incident sparked solidarity among allies, like France. A spokeswoman for UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, said he talked to both leaders. She said that he “retains unwavering support for Ukraine”. Friedrich Merz, winner of Germany elections, wrote that he stood with Ukraine “in good and testing times”. He added that “We must never confuse aggressor and victim in this terrible war”. Russia said that Trump and Vance had acted with restraint. A foreign ministry spokeswoman mentioned it had been a miracle the pair didn’t hit Zelensky. The European Union Commission President, Ursula von der Leyven, said that Zelensky’s “dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people. Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, proposed a summit between the US, and the European allies “to speak frankly how we intend to face today’s great challenges, starting with Ukraine”. The Kremlin hailed Trump’s “restraint” against Zelensky. Former President Dmitry Medvedev, said that “For the first time, Trump told the truth to the cocaine clown’s face”. Ukraine’s allies in Europe met in London on Sunday to support the Ukrainian President. The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, described Russia as the “aggressor”. Viktor Orban, Hungary’s President, praised Trump for standing “bravely for peace”. Donald Tusk, Prime Minister of Poland, one of Ukraine’s closest allies, said that the Ukrainians “were not alone”. Spain stated something similar.
The US will get the minerals, given Sunday’s announce.
