Last Thursday, June 29th, Russian General Sergei Surovikin was detained. He was the deputy commander of military operations in Ukraine. This happened after the attempted Wagner uprising six days before, which allegedly led Vladimir Putin to carry out a purge. Surovikin was supposedly arrested for taking the side of Yvegny Prigozyn during the rebellion.

It was reported that a large scale purge of the military begun after Wagner tried to storm Moscow and capture several military leaders. Surovikin was known for his Wagner sympathies, but it is unknown if he supported the attempted uprising. He was previously claimed to have strong links to Yvegny Prigozyn and the Wagner Group. Both worked together in Syria. US intelligence states he had prior warning of the rebellion attempt and chose to do nothing. It is also rumored he was arrested on June 25th. He has not been seen since Saturday 24th.
Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov mentioned that the arrest was one speculation in many. Putin held a meeting with media figures in the Kremlin and presented himself as a leader in total control. It has also been said that military members tied to Prigozyn were being investigated.
It seems that rather than overthrowing Putin, the uprising aimed to abduct Valery Gerasimov, Surovikin’s replacement in Ukraine. They also wanted to kidnap Defense Minister Segei Shoigu. Prigozyn has been critical of Gerasimov’s appointment as Supreme Commander of Russian Forces in Ukraine. The Wagner leader blames him and Shoigu for failures in Ukraine.

Surovikin is known for his ruthlessness. He fought in Chechnya and Syria, and has been condecorated by Putin. He is the current commander of the Russian Aerospace Forces, and the former Supreme Commander of the Russian Forces in Ukraine.
Surovikin was the leader of the Ukrainian operations. So, the impact of the arrest possibly will be felt mostly in this scenario. It will remain to be seen how this will affect the war. The impact of this dissapearance will be felt by the Russian troops in Ukraine in the following months. There is a high probability that the Ukrainians will take advantage of this.
